During a planned outage, Florida public power utility Gainesville Regional Utilities is completing a major maintenance milestone at the J.R. Kelly Plant with the overhaul of the gas turbine.

The operation required a crane to lift the turbine rotor, with a total lift weight of approximately 61,000 pounds, from its casing so it could be rotated, inspected, disassembled and rebuilt.

The maintenance represents a significant investment towards ensuring the long-term reliability of GRU's most efficient Combined Cycle unit. At certain times of the year, the J.R. Kelly Plant can supply nearly a quarter of the city’s electricity needs.

Taking advantage of the outage, crews are also completing maintenance on the Siemens steam turbine installed in 2021.

Maintenance activity is scheduled to be completed in early March to be available for summer peak loads.
