Reliability
Mike Muirhead, Public Utilities Director for the public power community of Garden City, Kansas, detailed a recently completed master plan for the city’s utility, as well as the steps that the Garden City utility has taken to improve reliability for the city while he has served as Public Utilities Director.
Workforce
The Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation on April 8 unveiled a number of key personnel moves as the joint action agency undergoes expansion to enhance its capacity in member service.
Distributed Energy Resources
The Department of the Interior recently announced a $19 million investment to install solar panels over irrigation canals in California, Oregon and Utah. They are being funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, which makes available $25 million for the design, study and implementation of projects to cover Reclamation-related water conveyance facilities with solar panels.
Chuck Bowlin, President and CEO of Tennessee public power utility Greeneville Energy Authority, recently passed away unexpectedly. Bowlin had served in the role of President and CEO since July 2020.
Safety
One hundred forty-five utilities have earned the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2023, APPA said on April 9. The Safety Awards have been held annually for more than 65 years.

The City of Dover Electric Department in Delaware is seeking proposals to augment its generation resources for full attribute solar power purchase agreements with a near-term commercial operation date.

Maryland public power utility Easton Utilities has named John Horner, Jr. as its next President and CEO, succeeding Hugh Grunden who retires on July 1. Horner currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Easton Utilities
