Overall, the current state of reliability in the U.S. electric utility industry is robust, and "we have enough time to get things right" to address major changes in the sector, Allen Mosher of the American Public Power Association told federal energy regulators on June 1.

The California Independent System Operator Board of Governors on Oct. 3 agreed to extend a plan to mitigate possible power interruptions this winter due to capacity restrictions on the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage fields serving the Los Angeles basin.

Oregon-based Portland General Electric, for now at least, will pursue the potential purchase of existing generation resources in the Oregon region and not construct two new natural gas-fired plants to meet projected capacity needs in its current integrated resource plan.

Summer electricity generation from hydropower in the area served by the California Independent System Operator is up 3.2 terawatt-hours from last summer, while generation from other renewable energy sources is up 2.3 TWh, the Energy Information Administration said on Sept. 7 in its latest short-term energy outlook.

Distributed Energy Resources
Last year the California grid region, which covers most of the state plus a small part of Nevada, "imported a net daily average of 201 million kilowatt-hours throughout the year from other western regions, or about 26 percent of its average daily demand," the Energy Information Administration said March 3 in its Today in Energy publication.
