California’s Sacramento Municipal Utility District has been recognized as the 2019 Public Power Utility of the Year by the Smart Electric Power Alliance.
SEPA on June 12 announced the winners of its 2019 Power Players Awards including Public Utility of the Year.
SEPA said that SMUD “has displayed excellence in the expansion of their Marketplace reach beyond industry norms.”
The public power utility has utilized its Marketplace to provide energy-efficient products to low-income communities at free or reduced prices and have expanded rebate offerings to include partnerships with multiple water utilities to deliver rebates on smart sprinkler systems for consumers, SEPA noted.
A consumer can purchase a smart sprinkler and apply the water rebate from their local water utility on the SMUD Energy Store, SEPA said.
Winners in the seven award categories will be honored July 29 during SEPA’s Grid Evolution Summit in Washington, D.C.
Texas-based public power utility Austin Energy, the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company and Walter Haase, general manager of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, were among the winners of the 2018 SEPA Power Players Awards.
