Missouri-based City Utilities (CU) of Springfield has stepped up its commitment to renewables by securing an additional 100 MW of wind energy from a 300-MW project currently under construction near Salina, Kansas.
CU noted in a March 6 news release that it is one of three entities acquiring power and renewable energy credits of the wind energy through a long-term purchased power agreement.
The Diamond Vista wind project was recently acquired by Enel Green Power North America Inc. from Tradewind Energy and is expected to be completed by late 2018.
Scott Miller, General Manager for CU said, “Our mission is to responsibly serve our customers and community beyond their expectations. The partnership with the Diamond Vista wind project will expand our renewable energy portfolio with another high-quality wind source. This positions CU to be able to provide low-cost, reliable and environmentally responsible energy to the Springfield community for decades to come.”
The addition of the resource, expected to begin delivery in early 2019, will bring the total renewable energy portfolio of CU to approximately 40 percent of the utility’s demand for electricity.
