Association recognizes Silicon Valley Power for mutual aid efforts

California public power utility Silicon Valley Power (SVP) recently received a mutual aid commendation from the American Public Power Association for electric restoration efforts it provided to the City of Redding Electric Utility (REU) during the 2018 Carr Fire, which was the eighth most destructive wildfire in California history.

“This national commendation is an honored distinction for SVP that reflects the organization’s continued support of its fellow public power utilities,” SVP said on May 13.

SVP sent ten of its field crew members to Redding, Calif., as the fire was still burning, to help rebuild the damaged electrical system. Crews worked 16-hour days in an effort to get the power up and running as quickly as safely possible, SVP said.

The Carr Fire directly affected REU, a public power utility in northern California with about 44,000 meters and a peak demand of 241 megawatts.

In response to the fire, REU put out a call for mutual aid from other utilities. Along with SVP, other California utilities that sent crews to help REU restore its system include the following public power utilities: Alameda Municipal Power, Lassen Municipal Utility District, Modesto Irrigation District, City of Roseville Utilities, SMUD, and the Western Area Power Administration.

Additional utilities that helped deal with the Carr Fire include Washington state-based Clark Public Utilities and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, both public power utilities.

Clark Public Utilities recently received a national commendation from the Association for its support in electric power restoration efforts around South Puget Sound and Western Oregon in recent months.
