Description

During this Cybersecurity Scorecard Working Group (CSWG) session, Subject Matter Experts will lead webinar participants through the foundational practices needed to detect cybersecurity events within their IT and OT network environments; specifically addressing: (1) potential event indicators, (2) incident detection technology, and (3) methods of managing events and incidents. During the second half of the session, Axio personnel will introduce new practice validation guidance that have been developed to assist APPA members in determining how well they are performing scorecard practices.

It is strongly recommended that all participants complete their Scorecard evaluation prior to the session, and if you have already completed your evaluation please review this section of the Scorecard (Situational Awareness) prior to the webinar. Also, please come to the session with questions prepared that are relevant to this topic area -- both Association and Axio staff are happy to assist with your inquiries.

Speaker

Dan Phillips, Director, Cyber Risk Engineering, Axio

Dan Phillips is a Director of Cyber Risk Engineering at Axio.  Axio is a cyber resilience optimization firm that helps organizations quantify and manage their cybersecurity risk by harmonizing cybersecurity technology/controls and cyber risk transfer.  Dan specializes in solution development for Axio’s energy sector clients; helping them to better understand the nature of their cybersecurity risks and recommending appropriate risk management strategies. Prior to coming to Axio, Dan worked as a regulator at the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for over 9 years.  Dan served as a senior member of FERC’s technical staff where he led FERC’s engagement with the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards and participated in dozens of audits and enforcement activities.  In this role, Dan was responsible for making technical recommendations to FERC’s leadership regarding the content of its orders and U.S. regulations. Dan was also responsible for providing technical analysis of emerging cybersecurity threats/events and has appeared before FERC and other federal agencies on a number of occasions to discuss electric reliability and cybersecurity matters.  Dan has earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore, a Master of Science in Information Technology from the University of Maryland University College, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Duquesne University. Dan is also an adjunct professor, he teaches cybersecurity courses in the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University.
