Public Power Day of Giving (CANCELLED)

Public power is defined by our commitment to community service. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Long Beach, California

This event has been cancelled

To protect the health and safety of our members, speakers, staff, and the public at large during the COVID-19 crisis, APPA has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 National Conference in Long Beach, California.

Unfortunately, that means APPA will not be able to host the Day of Giving community service activities this year, but we know know public power utilities around the country go above and beyond to serve their local communities year-round, especially now when so many communities are in need.

We encourage you to share how your utility and employees are giving back to your local communities by sharing your photos and stories on social media with the hashtags #PublicPower #DayofGiving

If you would also like to support the organizations we were going to work with in Long Beach, you can learn about them here:

  • A Sense of Home
A Sense of Home strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care with donated furniture and home goods.
  • Alamitos Beach Clean-Up
Alamitos Beach is an important part of Long Beach's environment, community and culture, relying on volunteers to help protect the local ecosystem and wildlife for everyone to enjoy.
  • WAGS Pet Adoption
WAGS shelters and cares for companion animals, investigates and combats animal cruelty, rescues neglected pets, treats sick and injured strays, and educates the community about humane issues and responsible pet care.

We look forward to hosting the Day of Giving again next year at the 2021 National Conference, June 18-23 in Chicago, Illinois.

Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Public power is defined by our commitment to community service. Each year we kick-off the National Conference by celebrating this commitment with the Public Power Day of Giving, where conference participants can donate a day to volunteer with local service organizations in our host community. In addition to engaging in a day of meaningful volunteer activities, participants get to spend the day meeting other members of the national public power community, making lasting connections that will remain long after the conference is over.

The Public Power Day of Giving will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021.

Information for Volunteers

Who can volunteer?
All conference participants are invited and encouraged to participate in the Public Power Day of Giving. Bring your spouse, children, friends … guests are welcome! Any volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. (Some projects may have age restrictions).

What if I don’t have any skills or experience?
That’s not a problem – most of the work opportunities don’t require any particular skill sets, and on-site training will be provided. All you need is a desire to help.

Do I need to bring my own tools?
No; all of the tools you will need at the work site, so you don't need to worry about bringing your tools with you on the plane (unless you really want to).

Who will I work with?
The Association will work with the volunteer projects to assign working groups based on your skills and any special requirements. We will keep you together with your guests, but getting to know new people you may not otherwise meet at the conference is one of the great benefits of participating in the Day of Giving.

What about meals and drinking water?
We will have plenty of water available at the work sites, and a lunch will be provided. A light breakfast will be provided Friday morning before the buses depart for the work sites.
