DEED Webinar: Flexing Daytime EV Charging to Match Local Renewable Growth

Electric vehicle (EV) charging is placing demands on distribution grids which will soon require new investment to meet customer demand and retain reliability. If municipal utilities employ intelligent local energy market platforms to incentivize demand flexibility, customers can be encouraged to charge their EVs when the sun is shining and local solar generation is clean and inexpensive, and utilities can delay spending money on new infrastructure to support EV charging.

Local energy markets generate incentives for customers to charge in a way that helps the community and the environment by matching flexible loads with available renewable energy and infrastructure. Blockchain technology with smart contracts offers a low-cost, scalable, and efficient way of recording those transactions. SMUD and its collaborators received $97,000 in DEED funding to pilot a program that would coordinate EV charging and times of high solar generation using local grid conditions and blockchain based incentives. Their pilot project demonstrated that locally coordinated incentives which encouraged customers to select a preference to “flex” charging with local renewable energy or grid savings led customers to choose to delay the start of 60% of their charges and allow the system to automatically optimize the delivery according to their preferences

Denver Hinds of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Killian Tobin of Omega Grid, LLC and Neha Nandakumar of the EDF Innovation Lab will detail their pilot design process and full findings in this DEED webinar. DEED members can learn more about the project in the DEED Project Library.
