The Kissimmee Utility Authority in Florida encouraged its customers to observe Earth Day yesterday by signing up for its new paperless eBill payment option. Customers who enroll in the program receive email reminders to let them know when their payment is due. They can log in and make a payment, or sign up for automatic monthly payments that deduct the amount due from a credit card. Bank drafting, which allows bills to be directly debited to a checking or savings account, also is available upon request. The system stores 24 months of bills and usage data and offers customers the option to print a paper copy for their records. By switching to electronic billing, payment and statements, the average U.S. household can save six pounds of paper, 23 pounds of wood and avoid producing 29 pounds of greenhouse gasses in one year, according to PayItGreen.

In memoriam . . . Paul E. Conlan, founder of Enercom, an Atlanta-based energy consulting company, died on April 8 from complications following a brain aneurysm. Software developed by Enercom, Energy Depot, is available to public power utilities via APPA's subsidiary, Hometown Connections.
