Utility governing boards, city council members and utility managers will have an opportunity to attend several in-depth pre-conference seminars at the 2013 APPA National Conference.

The pre-conference seminars, offered on Saturday, June15, and Sunday, June 16, offer longer class times and smaller class sizes than traditional conference sessions, allowing participants to learn about complicated topics of critical importance to the utility in greater depth, and with the benefit of more interactive formats and personalized attention from experienced instructors.

The seminars are specifically tailored for high-level attendees, including members of elected and appointed governing boards, mayors and city councils, and utility managers. Courses range from overviews, designed with those new to the public power industry in mind, to more in-depth examinations of issues affecting our industry.

Pre-conference seminar topics will include:

•    Electric Utility Basics
•    Overview of Utility Financial Operations for Boards
•    The Board’s Role in Monitoring Utility Performance
•    Understanding a Utility’s Cost Structure and its Effect on Customers’ Rates
•    Duties, Responsibilities and Legal Obligations of Public Power Governing Boards
•    Strategic Planning for Long-Term Utility Effectiveness
•    Pole Attachment Issues
•    The Strategic Value of Demand Response for Public Power
•    Smart Grid: New Opportunities and Challenges for Public Power
•    Preparing Your Utility for Upcoming Storms: Disaster Preparedness

The 2013 National Conference will be held June 15-19 in Nashville, Tenn., at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Conference program and registration information, including detailed information on pre-conference seminars, is available atwww.publicpower.org/NationalConference.
