The Tennessee Valley Authority now has 10 contracts with nine wind farms delivering more than 1,500 megawatts of wind energy. TVA’s wind expansion in 2012 led to its being named "Utility of the Year" by the American Wind Energy Association and among the "Most Innovative Utilities in Renewable Integration" by Fierce Energy.
"We're confident that wind power will continue to demonstrate its value, effectiveness and potential in the years to come," said Patty West, director of TVA renewable energy programs.
In November and December 2012, TVA integrated 165 MW from the Cimarron wind farm in Gray County, Kan., and 200 MW from the California Ridge Wind Energy Center in Champaign County, Ill.
TVA also activated 535 MW of wind power in January 2012 from four wind farms in Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, and 200 megawatts in July 2012 from another facility in Illinois.
TVA’s renewable energy portfolio totals more than 6,300 MW of operating or committed energy capacity from hydro, wind, solar and biomass.
