The Sacramento Municipal Utility District has been awarded the Best Employer Partner Award
for its internship program with Luther Burbank High School.
Presented by Linking Education and Economic Development (LEED), the award acknowledges
the utility’s long-term educational partnership with the local high school. Each summer SMUD hires 25
11th and 12th grade students for a paid internship opportunity – giving students exposure to a
professional office environment, work assignments, and interactions with adults as co-workers.
Additionally, SMUD hosts an annual Speaker Day and a Career Day at the high school. These events
introduce students to potential careers at SMUD, helps them to understand the relationship between
education and career success, and exposes them to the energy industry and related topics.
SMUD has a comprehensive education partnership program that supports education and
career exploration by offering teacher workshops, curriculum development, review and support, as well
as high school and college internships.
