EPA seeks comments on updating radiation protection standards

From the February 10, 2014 issue of Public Power Daily

Originally published February 10, 2014

The Environmental Protection Agency has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking soliciting public comment on potential approaches to updating its radiation protection standards for nuclear power operations. The standards, which were originally issued in 1977, "were never intended to be static" and do not reflect the most recent scientific information, the agency said.

The standards limit radiation releases and doses to the public from normal operation of nuclear power plants and other uranium fuel cycle facilities. The regulation contains two main provisions: a dose limit to members of the public, and a radionuclide release limit to the environment.

Comments on the advance notice are due by June 4.
