The Department of Energy on Nov. 25 issued proposed new standards for electric motors that DOE said will save U.S. businesses about $23 billion over the next 30 years. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy immediately praised the move, saying the new standards will make U.S. industry more competitive, will save a trillion kilowatt-hours, and will reduce power sector emissions. ACEEE noted that, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration figures, about one-half of all electricity used by U.S. industry goes to motors.
