Demand-response program gets positive review at OPPD

Shirley Stadler wanted her utility to know how pleased she was with its air conditioning management program, writes Alice Clamp in an article for Public Power magazine. Stadler, a customer of the Omaha Public Power District, said people tend to acknowledge the negative rather than the positive.

Through OPPD’s program, Stadler’s compressor switches off for approximately 15 minutes at a time over a two-and-a-half-hour period when electricity demand is at its highest.

"I’m quite comfortable when the temperature in the house is 75 during the day," Stadler told the magazine. "And I don’t notice any difference on those days when the system cycles on and off as part of the program."

OPPD launched the program in March 2012 to help reduce its peak demand, said Renee Jaksich, product marketing specialist in the utility’s corporate marketing and communications division. Prior to the launch, the utility tested the concept for two years with 100 OPPD employees who participated in a pilot study.

For the pilot, OPPD used Cooper Power Systems’ Yukon demand-response software and intelligent load control switches. "It’s a software web-based portal," Jaksich said. "The program is our ‘warehouse’ for all the serial numbers associated with the load control relays. When we log onto the system, we can schedule a management event and insert the date and timeframe. The system will send out a page to all load control relays."

OPPD has signed a contract with Cooper to use the system through 2017 for its air conditioning management program.
