President Obama yesterday nominated Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Ernest Moniz to head the Energy Department and nominated the Environmental Protection Agency's Gina McCarthy to lead the EPA. He also announced that Wal-Mart executive Sylvia Mathews Burwell is his choice to head the Office of Management and Budget.

Moniz and Burwell both worked for the Clinton administration, The Washington Post reported.

Moniz, if confirmed by the Senate, would replace Steven Chu, a Nobel-prize winning physicist, at the helm of the Department of Energy. Moniz, who also is a physicist, is "another brilliant scientist" who already knows his way around Washington, D.C., President Obama said. "Ernie knows that we can produce more energy and grow our economy while still taking care of our air, our water and our climate," Obama said.

McCarthy has headed the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation for the past four years. As assistant EPA administrator, she "has focused on practical, cost-effective ways to keep our air clean and our economy growing," the president said. McCarthy "has earned a reputation as a straight shooter" and she welcomes different points of view, he said. The president added that taking action to fight climate change is among his priorities.

McCarthy "has a reputation for being both raucously funny and a formidable force," reported Politico, adding that Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., who has called global warming "a hoax," voted in favor of McCarthy's assistant secretary nomination when it came before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
