President Obama’s executive order on cyber security "is an important step in maintaining the already-high level of mandatory cyber security standards that govern our industry while also opening the door to other venues of collaboration between the federal government and the electric utility sector," APPA said in a Feb. 14 statement.

The ability of public power utilities to appropriately receive critical information from the government on cyber threats "will enable them to continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety and reliability of their electric utility assets," the association said.

With the release of the executive order, the president "continues to make clear that protecting critical infrastructure from cyber attacks is a priority for his administration," APPA said. "Public power utilities share this goal."
