APPA offers Key Accounts Certificate Program in Nashville

APPA will hold its Key Accounts Certificate Program at the association's Fall Education Institute, Oct. 1-5, at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.
Today's evolving electric industry requires key account employees to have specific skills, technical knowledge and training. To help these individuals meet their needs, APPA created a four-day certificate program designed for public power key account representatives and those who manage utility key accounts programs.
The curriculum consists of the following three courses:
• Implementing a Customer-Focused Key Accounts Program, which helps participants develop measurable goals for their key accounts program and focuses on strategic issues, such as identifying candidates for energy efficiency, demand-side management and renewable energy projects;
• Developing Your Key Accounts Representative, designed to enhance account management and customer-relationship skills and help participants develop a customer marketing plan template; and
• The Effective Key Accounts Toolbox, which helps representatives analyze and apply existing resources to improve the utility’s relationship with its customers.
To earn a Key Public Power Account Executive certificate, participants must complete the required course work and, within two years, pass an oral and online exam and successfully file a key accounts business plan and customer marketing plan with APPA. Individuals who wish to maintain their certification must complete 20 hours of additional approved continuing education training every two years.
These courses are held once a year although, as an alternative, they can be offered as in-house courses. The classes can be taken individually or as part of the certificate program. The program was launched in 2002 and, to date, nearly 100 public power professionals from across the nation have graduated.
In addition to the certificate program, the Fall Education Institute also will feature in-depth courses on accounting, cost of service and rate design, financial planning, overhead distribution systems and the new 2012 APPA Safety Manual.
APPA's annual Public Power Leadership Workshop will also be held at the Loews Vanderbilt Oct. 3-5. The program is designed for general managers and CEOs (particularly those new to their jobs) as well as those on track for executive management positions.
