Save the date for APPA’s Public Communications Committee Spring Issues Roundtable to be held Friday, April 5 at APPA’s offices in Washington, D.C. This annual one-day event covers issues common to strategy development as well as managing, budgeting and staffing the communications/marketing function for public power systems. The deadline for major APPA individual and utility award nominations is Thursday, Jan. 31.  Nominees can be submitted online. These awards honor leaders in the public power community who have made significant contributions to the industry as well as utilities that are thriving in terms of system achievement and community service. APPA will hold its Customer Service Management Certificate Program during the Winter Education Institute, Feb. 4-8, 2013, in Kissimmee, Fla. These courses are only held once a year. The program is tailored to public power customer service representatives, managers and supervisors. The course work consists of the following five classes: Power Supply and Integrated Resource Planning, Management of Successful Customer Service Operations, The Leadership Development Process, Technology: From Meter Reading to Customer Information Systems, and Utility Collections: The Complete Process. The courses are tailored to public power utilities and provide specific information and strategies that participants can use in their jobs. To date, more than 80 public power professionals have completed the required course work and 18 have graduated from the program.
