Carolyn Justice-Hinson, communications and community relations officer for the Fayetteville, N.C., Public Works Commission was recently appointed to head APPA’s Public Communications Committee at APPA’s Customer Connections Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. Justice-Hinson will serve as chair of the committee in 2012. JT McSpadden, communications specialist with Johnson City, Tenn., Power Board will be vice chair.

The Florida Municipal Electric Association recently honored the community service efforts of Keys Energy Services in Key West, Fla., (KEYS) by recognizing the municipal electric utility with the 2012 Community Service Award. KEYS received the award for its commitment to enhancing its customers’ quality of life through community-improvement programs such as its environmental initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases and ongoing involvement and support of numerous school/youth-related activities and programs throughout its service area.

In September, the Holland, Mich., Board of Public Works received a 2012 Neighborhood Environmental Partners Program Award from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for the utility’s Recycle Rewards event.  At the event, customer could recycle air conditioners and dehumidifiers (items that most recycling centers won’t take).  The program captured energy savings by getting these antiquated appliances off the grid; ensured proper Freon removal and metal recycling; and helped customers save money on their electric bills.

Riverside, Calif., Public Utilities (RPU) recently received two Silver Awards in the 7th Annual W³ Awards, sponsored by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.   The W³ Awards honor creative excellence worldwide from Fortune 500 companies to small agencies, and recognizes the creative and marketing professionals behind award winning websites, web video, and online marketing programs.  Riverside Public Utilities’ website GreenRiverside.comreceived recognition in the government website category, while the utility’s "January Back of Bill" video garnered the nod in the government video category.

The Public Relations Society of America’s Inland Empire Chapter also honored RPU with six separate awards in its annual Polaris Awards competition.  The Polaris Awards recognize public relations tactics and programs that successfully incorporate sound research, planning, execution and evaluation.  RPU received three Capella Awards for its Green Leadership Summit event; 2011 Financial Report; and internal Employee Newsletter. An additional Cappella Award was given to RPU staff for their help in creating the Riverside Police Department’s "Safe in Our Arms" strategic plan report.  Lastly, RPU received two Polaris Awards for its website and its Tree Power free shade tree campaign.

Lastly, the League of American Communications Professionals honored RPU with a Gold Award in its 2012 Spotlight Awards, the world’s largest global communications competition, for its summer "Power Partner" video on the Superform company in Riverside.
