Apprentice Events


Below are the 2017 Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo Apprentice event descriptions. Additional information, including construction diagrams, materials, and images will be provided at a later date.


Cutout Fuse Replacement (3ф)

This event will be simulated dead. And rubber gloves are NOT required; however the apprentice shall preform the task complying with all safe work practices. Time will start at the judge’s signal. This event will require the apprentice to change the fuse links from all three cut-out switches and close the switches simulating restoring power.

Mean Time: 10 min  Drop Dead Time: 15 min

Hurtman Rescue

This event is a simulation of rescuing an injured co-worker. The apprentice must ascend the 40’ pole and safely lower the mannequin to the ground. Time starts at the judge’s signal with apprentice standing at least an arm’s length from the pole in any direction.  Note: The apprentice’s belt and hooks will be lying on the ground at arm’s length.

Insulator Change Out (2ф)

This event will consist of changing both crossarm insulators that are tied in with a preform wrap-lock with a rubber grommet. The event will be considered de-energized and grounded, therefore rubber gloves will not be required. The apprentice must raise and lower all material in a bag attached to the handline. The apprentice must change out both preform wrap locks and rubber grommet.

Obstacle Course

The apprentice will climb the pole and perform specific tasks at four different stations.  Each station will be framed with 8’ Fiberglass crossarms.  The apprentice may start at the bottom station and work up or at the top station and work down. Time starts at judges signal and time will stop when the apprentice has both feet on the ground. The fall arrest must remain attached for proper adjustment verification by the event judge.

Mean Time: 7 min.  Drop Dead Time: 10 min.

Written Test

The written test is a timed 20-minute test given annually to encourage safety at all times when working in the field and during competitions, such as the Public Power Lineworkers Rodeo. This written test event takes place on Friday afternoon before the Saturday field events.
